Sukhwinder says reality shows are scripted

An article and interview about Sukhwinder Singh appeared on Indiatoday website.

It’s pouring offers for Sukhwinder Singh in both Bollywood and Hollywood. But instead of giving himself a pat on the back and taking all the credit, the playback singer says he owes his success to ace composer A.R. Rahman.

“Rahman has been a catalyst in my success because when everyone had turned me down and ridiculed my song ‘Thaiyan thaiyan’, he was the only one to believe in me. With few changes in lyrics, he gave me my first big success in the form of ‘Chaiyyan chaiyyan’,” Sukhwinder told IANS in an interview.
Sukhwinder, who started his Bollywood stint with the 1986 film “Karma”, witnessed an upswing in his career with the hugely popular song “Chaiyyan chaiyyan” in the 1998 film “Dil Se”.

He later went on to sing hits like “Main ramta jogi” (”Taal”), “Kambakht ishq” (”Pyar Tune Kya Kiya”), “Chak de” (”Chak De! India”), “Dil haara” (”Tashan”), “Dard-e-disco” (”Om Shanti Om”) and the recent hit “Haule haule” from “Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi”.
The singer, whose voice has a rustic feel, has also gone international.

“I have sung a Kutchi folk song for a Steven Spielberg film starring Denzel Washington, because they wanted authentic Indian music,” said Sukhwinder.

“Earlier too, my song ‘Chaiyyan chaiyyan’ was used for the film ‘Inside Man’. Recently I sang a song ‘Jai ho’ for Hollywood film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, where again the music is by Rahman,” he added.
While Sukhwinder has lent his powerful voice to many Hindi film actors, his songs picturised on superstar Shah Rukh Khan are sure-shot hits.

“The fact is that many of my songs with other actors have been equally popular like ‘Tu kisna hai’ (’Kisna’), ‘Ishq bina’ (’Taal’), ‘Rut aa gayee re’ (’1947 Earth’), ‘Aj mera jee kardaa’ (’Monsoon Wedding’), ‘Beedi jalai le’ (’Omkara’) and many more.

“But people always remember my songs picturised on Shah Rukh. I think the reason is that the energy he brings to the screen is amazing. Since my voice too has a high-energy point, it gels well with Shah Rukh’s personality,” the singer explained.

Sukhwinder also made an appearance on television as one of the judges for STAR Plus’ musical reality show “Star Voice of India 2″, but he found the experience far from pleasing.

“It’s better not to comment on my stint as a judge. Things are very different when scripts in such shows bind you,” he said.

So, what about the current crop of singers that such shows are churning out?

“As for the current crop, we do have a few good singers … they are promising too, but the system is not really open to newcomers. The struggle phase is long. So most of the time, good singers don’t last and give up too soon,” he said.

Sukhwinder, who has been in the industry for more than two decades now, has his hands full.
“‘Billu Barber’, ‘Ravana’, ‘Kaminay’… It’s difficult to recall names of all the films I’m doing,” said the singer

My meeting with the wonderful person Sonu Nigam Ji

Rithisha

Like numerous music lovers, I too am one of those millions who truly admire Sonuji’s singing skills. So you can imagine how excited I was to meet him. The top 5 were taken to his place in Versova, Mumbai. As soon as we reached his place we were led into a room having beautiful seating arrangement with magnificent Idols of Lord Ganpati and there were huge portraits of Mohammad Rafi ji and Lata Mangeshkar ji, which mesmerized us all and we too clicked pictures of those portraits of our Idols. While we were busy admiring the beauty of the place and the pictures of Sonuji as a child, his Father, etc.,

Sonuji walked in with his baby boy ( such a cutie ). He had such a magnetic personality that simply drew all our attention towards him, listening keenly to everything he said. He was really friendly. One by one he heard a few lines of the songs that each of us were going to sing in Sonu nigam special episode. As usual I awaited my turn, while Vipul, Saptaparna, Mallar and Ravi finished, being prompted by Gajji sir who was also along with us.

Sonu Nigam & his son

Finally Sonu ji himself called me forward to sing a few lines of my songs. The songs that were given to me were ‘ruki ruki thi zindagi’ and ‘kabhi alvida na kehna’ ( which surprisingly (!!) was so very apt to be sung by me when I got eliminated just the previous episode! ). All of us were pretty nervous to be singing Sonuji’s songs in front of him. But he completely understood us and our vocal problems so well that it made us really comfortable. I mustered enough courage [ :-) ] and sang ‘ruki ruki thi zindagi’ first.

Sonu Nigam and Rithisha

He was impressed with my voice quality. He said I had a ‘khanak’ in my voice which would definitely come out all the more gracefully while singing on microphone. Then I sang a few lines of ‘Kabhi alvida Na kehna’. He was so friendly in his manner of correcting me too. He said the song is a beautiful song that can bring tears in one’s eyes if it is sung keeping certain technical aspects along with the song’s feel in mind. He said the song needs some prominent vibrato to be used in the voice. He also told that I have a lot of tayyari in my voice and my harkat n murkiyan come out very clearly but the requirement of the song was to sing it in a simple manner with very subtle murkiyan n soft graces. So I tried to adapt what he advised in my 2nd attempt at the song. He was happy to see that I was able to implement it to a really good extent immediately itself. I was so excited at having sung in front of him.

I felt blessed when Sonu Nigamji said “Rithisha your voice is unique and different among the whole lot in VOI this year and even when you sing without a microphone I feel this and when you will sing with a microphone and when your voice will be used commercially you will do wonders.”

Then he was asked to comment about each of us a little just for the reality shoot’s sake on camera. Being the extremely sharp, n intelligent person he is, he remembered each of our names perfectly and the songs we sang including our plus and minus points. He told about me that he really liked the timber of my voice which according to him is really strong, open voiced and different and he said that live, there itself he liked the khanak in my voice a lot and he expressed that definitely he expects it to sound all the more bright on studio microphone. He said with a little polish I could really go places and he even said that maybe in the future he’ll even sing along with me!!(Playback) ( unfortunately this AV of mine was not aired as I got eliminated in the previous episode ) [ :-( ].

He could have elaborated on our negative points too being the accomplished singer he is, but he very sweetly tried to encourage us and told us the negative points in such a mild way like a suggestion and hence it really got fixed in our memory. He had a cup of tea with us and then we departed after cuddling his cute baby boy. It was one of the most memorable days of my life. I sincerely thank Gajji sir and STPL for actually taking us to meet Sonuji. We got to learn a lot!!
:-)

Rithisha back home

Posted on December 7th, 2008 by Jugal Kishore Bajaj

Rithisha

Rithisha came back home today morning from Mumbai after her journey in Amul Star Voice of India ended.

She will write about her meeting with Sonu Nigam tomorrow night.

She has to settle down after hectic activities for last many months. She also has to get out of the traumatic experiences and the ill treatment she was meted out all throughout the show.

On the other hand we should also thank Amul Star Voice of India for which we now know Rithisha otherwise we would have not known Rithisha so well.

She is still young and if luck goes with her she will definitely become a good singer in bollywood.

Lets wish her Best of Luck for all her future endevours.

Well done Rithisha

As expected Rithisha accepted her elimination from Amul Star Voice of India gracefully with no dramas from her side.

Judges were all out praising her last performance but it was too late and made promises too.Personally I feel these promises are fake.I have seen promises in many reality shows which were never kept.

Anyways Rithisha took her elimination nicely and lets wish her all the best in times to come.

Although she was eliminated but she got to meet Sonu Nigam and about the meeting I have asked Rithisha to write herself and may be she will write when she returns to Bangalore.

I have also asked her to write articles about her experience in Amul Star Voice of India as well as her activities from now on so that she can keep in touch with the fans she have made while she was on Star Voice of India.Lets hope for the best.

Rithisha

The theme of the final episode for Rithisha in Amul Star Voice of India is new songs.

Rithisha sang the song Marjawan from the movie Fashion. She sang the song in her own style and introduced wonderful variations.

Sukhwinder

All the Judges specially Sukhwinder Singh was so impressed that he went on praising and praising Rithisha and which continued till the next episode.

Sukhwinder Singh even went on to say that he will ask music director that Rithisha should sing with him in his next duet song.
Monty

Judge Monty also praised Rithisha.

Shaan

To put the promise on record Shaan even went on to say to the Judges that we hope we can play Rithisha`s own song in next Voice of India.

All these promises made always turn out of to be false but lets hope promises made to Rithisha are honoured and she gets a break.

Vipul is safe and the other three are in bottom. On her elimination Rithisha sang the song Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and bid goodbye to Amul Star Voice of India.

It seems the Rithisha elimination episode will be shown next week.

Rithisha is still in Mumbai and the night when the Mumbai terror incidents started Rithisha and all other contestents were taken to watch the movie Yuvraaj but when information about firing spread they were taken back to their residing place in the middle of the movie.

Rithisha might return to Bangalore next week.
